Education Committee is currently co-chaired by Vickie Izuka from First Hawaiian Bank and Shamika Ratwatte from Ernst & Young. The Education Committee believes in supporting the students in our public and private schools as they will be the future of the CNMI. This committee is responsible for several key programs at the Saipan Chamber of Commerce and meets on the second Wednesday of each month to plan its activities. The committee was previously co-chaired by Vicky Benavente early of 2016; Velma Palacios and Janice Tenorio back in 2014.
In the spring of each year, the committee conducts interviews and selects recipients for Educational Scholarships. More information is available under the Events & Programs section of this website. Six scholarships are awarded annually in the amount of $2,000 each. Four are given to high school seniors entering college. One is given to a college student already attending college for more than one year. One is given to a student pursuing a vocational career.
High School Workshops
The committee also undertakes a High School Workshop for local senior students at public and private schools. This workshop aims to prepare the students for life after graduation.
Career Exploration Day
In December each year, the Chamber holds its Career Exploration Day where high school students have the opportunity to spend one day at a Chamber business to see what the world of work entails; most students also attend the General Membership meeting that same day.
